Once you have your manuscript finished and ready to send to a publisher or agent, you need to format it properly and write a cover letter. A member of my writing circle in York went on a publishing course recently and brought this brief guideline with her today for us to read. I thought some people here might also be interested in reading the information.
Manuscript Submission.
Times New Roman
12point 1.5 spaced or double
Printed on one side of A4
Wide margins
Aligned to the left
Loose sheets - do not bind
Header and footer on each page
Name to the left - page number to the right
Cover Letter to send with first 3 chapters.
1 page A4 single spaced Times New Roman 12point—keep it simple 250 words max preferably 150, 3 paragraphs - each 50 words.
1. Subject of the book
2. Its selling point
3. About yourself
Para 1
i) Who is the main character?
ii) What do they want?
iii) What gets in her way?
iv) What does she do about it?
Para 2
i) What genre is the book?
ii) What is your aim?
iii) What makes it remarkable
iv) Who will it appeal to?
Para 3
About yourself.
Write to an agent or to a small publisher. Sum up the book to present it to a diverse group of people.
Many agents and publishers will often throw your work in the bin and never read it when it is not formatted properly, mainly because they don’t have the time to sift through poorly presented manuscripts.
