Diana Gabaldon's epic American Revolution novel A Breath of Snow and Ashes made a big impact in its first week or release in the U.K. The book debuted at number three on the original fiction chart with a sale of more than 4,000 copies for Random House imprint Century.
Good though its start was, the novel lags some distance behind the chart leader, Terry Pratchett, who racked up sales of more than 36,000 units with his new release Thud! (Doubleday). Pratchett's cult following in the U.K. is still growing, and no hardback book save for 'Harry Potter' has sold more in a single week this year than his.
Other hits on the chart include James Patterson's latest, Mary, Mary (Headline) and Lionel Shriver's We Need To Talk About Kevin. The latter, published by tiny independent Serpent's Tail, has now sold around 80,000 copies in the U.K., most of them since winning the prestigious Orange Prize for Fiction this summer.
