Alison Sharman is CBBC's new controller and is getting off to a good start by making her first commission Johnny and the Bomb, a series based on the book with the same title by Terry Pratchett.
The book is part of a trilogy, the Johnny Maxwell series, and the show is to star Zoe Wanamaker, Frank Finlay and Keith Baron, John Henshaw and Felicity Montagu and hails from the production company Childsplay, who were responsible for Feather Boy and Stig of the Dump.
The plot revolves around Johnny and his friends who happen across a strange, semi-conscious old bag lady called Mrs Tachyon, and soon discover that there’s more to the old lady than meets the eye – such as holding the key to different eras and times, including the Blackbury Blitz of 1941.
The show is being filmed on location in South Wales; Jon East of CBBC is the executive producer, Peter Tabern the writer and it is being directed by Dermot Boyd.
"It's a hugely entertaining story, and has attracted a magnificent cast," said Sharman. "In the hands of producer Peter Tabern and director Dermot Boyd, it promises to make a truly memorable serial."
