I WISH I had a fiver for every "new J K Rowling" that publishers have unearthed.
Sophie Codman, of Mirfield, is the daughter of former Examiner colleague Sally Codman, and I've been reading her first book Wizard, just out...
The 16-year-old at Mirfield Free Grammar School, writes as Sophie Wainwright and I'm sure has enough sense to have no wish to be the second anybody.
Having said that, there is a young wizard (a la Harry Potter), a three-book quest (Tolkien-style) and just a touch of Terry Pratchett in some of the characterisation, which only shows that there's nothing totally new in the world of sci-fi.
But Sophie writes crisply, originally and well.
The first part of Wizard is called The Novice's Quest. It coms from Aultbea Publishers of Inverness and it is on sale at Ottakar's at £9.95
