English fantasy author Terry Pratchett -- whose science-fiction and fantasy novels have sold more than 50 million copies worldwide -- will be a guest of honor at MidSouthCon 25, the 25th annual Memphis convention devoted to science-fiction, fantasy, horror, science, comic books and gaming.
The event will be held March 23-25 at the Holiday Inn Select, 2240 Democrat at Airways.
Perhaps best known for his popular and satirical "Discworld" series, Pratchett -- who was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1998 for "services to literature" -- is one of close to 50 special guests who will attend the convention, including authors, comic book artists, movie professionals and NASA scientists.
Among those who will sign autographs, take part in panel discussions and meet and greet visitors in addition to Pratchett are DC and Marvel Comics veteran Mark Waid, known for writing "The Flash," "Captain America" and "Legion of Super-Heroes"; fantasy book cover artist Don Maitz (also known for designing the Captain Morgan's Rum pirate); and William Blair, an actor who has appeared in "Babylon 5," "X-Files" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."
Events will include a masquerade, a midnight dance, screening rooms devoted to science fiction and anime, gaming rooms, "filking" (folk songs on genre topics) and more. An art gallery and a dealers' room filled with toys, movies and other memorabilia for sale also are part of the event.
Weekend registration is $45. For more information, visit midsouthcon.org or call (731) 664-6730.
