Terry Pratchett reacted to the news that he'd received a knighthood by saying he was "flabbergasted". Our beloved author of the Discworld series of books, amongst others, which have been translated into 33 languages and sold over 55 million copies, received the honour for services to literature.
Terry Pratchett said: "There are times when phrases such as 'totally astonished' just don't do the job.
"I am of course delighted and honoured and, needless to say, flabbergasted."
As we all know, Terry shocked his fans when he announced last year that he'd been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's, and has since found himself at the vanguard of a campaign to bring greater awareness, as well at greater treatments, to the disease, which is often mistakenly thought of as an unavoidable/untreatable part of getting older. Terry Pratchett's involvement in the campaign really got started in the public eye when he donated half a million pounds to Alzheimer's research , and has since climbed to ever greater heights with numerous TV appearances and a visit to Number 10 (the Prime Minister).
Many fans of the Discworld novels will no doubt consider his knighthood well overdue as the first Discworld book, The Colour of Magic, was published in 1983 and he's been adding to them with around one book for each year ever since. For a long time Terry Pratchett was Britain's best known unknown author, his knighthood for services to literature will assure his place as one of the best writers of our time.
