Introduction

He felt the cold, icy, droplets of rain, run down his forehead. He wiped them off his brow, and put on his jacket. It had been over half an hour and still no sign of the lady in black. As he stood next to Maxi's diner he watched the many different hover cars and buses fly by and gazed above at the skyscrapers higher than the smog-filled clouds and the people going about their daily business. Men in suits going to work, mothers looking after their families, and even the occasional droid window cleaning and building tower blocks. Model society? Like as if there was such a thing. Disease and wars had spread to more than one world these days.

He checked his 'Central Navigation Computer mk2.4'; a dusty old piece of machinery, but it got the job done and had nothing planned in his grey uneventful life, yet he ever-wished that he did.

Most of the time he felt resentment; no job, no girlfriend and no one to trust. But only an hour ago, him of all people; Ben Hapmen, age 23, a loser and nothing to live for, was approached in a bar by two men in suits and a lady in black. She told him to be here 35 minutes ago for a job with a large pay-check. He couldn't resist. It would be a pleasant alternative to the dead-end job at the spaceport, loading crates on to the landing dock because 'offenders we not aloud on the space planes'. It was a lot worse than standing in the rain being promised money. "Stupid boss thinks he can be better than everyone," he muttered to himself, and quietly cursed. But not only was Ben depressed with himself, he had been waiting outside, in the cold, damp toxin filled air of London. The rain got heavier and the thunder started. At that moment a hover car pulled up, a monster of a vehicle - one of those brand new 32054 whirlwind black models that could only be afforded by the rich - a chrome finish with 32 inch retractable fuel input injectors, state of the art and the pinnacle of 2089 engineering. Standing back in amazement, Ben didn't notice the side door fling open and he desperately tried to react against the arms that were grasping and pulling him into the darkness of the machine. His arms let go.
