Today is certainly my last day of Summer. It's the day when fishing rods will be cleaned for the last time, reels oiled and packed away in their cases, lines and flies dried out and put back into boxes and fishing bags.
Today is the end of the trout fishing season. Those lovely warm days waist deep in the river, throwing artificial flies over the heads of trout and for the main part, having them ignored, are now at an end.
Thoughts now turn to the creative. All those activities to keep you out of the cold weather outside. A bit of writing here, a few new tunes there and always three or four new books lying around in various stages of being read; for when the mind needs bit of a jolt. Now may be the time to try getting to grips with Nation; something I couldn't do on the first impression.
There is no need to wait a month for the artificially induced 'Summmer Time' to be removed from our clocks, you can feel it in your bones. The slight chill on your arms during that early morning walk. The darker mornings, encouraging that stay-in-bed attitude. The sight of all those Christmas decorations on display in the major chain stores; fuelling the Directors' needs for earlier and quicker profits over the previous year.
Yes... Summmer is definitely over.
But...
There are always the more enjoyable things to come. The welcome glass of 'something warming' when touring the neighbourhood with a small group of parents and children, rendering the traditional carols to the accompaniment of an accordion.
Best of all will be the appearance of a special guest at the festive table. The last resident of the freezer. That elusive denizen of the still , deep, pool you stalked for weeks.
As the smell of the herbs and sweet sauce fills your nostrils with their sweet scent, your mind fills with the knowledge that the first day of Summer will arrive again.
