Without coming down on either side of the moral issue, the movie producers and networks are shooting themselves in the foot by not making popular titles available more widely and more quickly.
I can see Sky One wanting to broadcast The Colour of Magic first and exclusively. After all, they put up a lot of money for it and want to recoup that investment not only in advertising, but in new customers to their service. But this is a global marketplace, and they are marketing it globally through the internet, with not only their own official web sites, but also through MySpace and Facebook, and I'm sure other social sites. They are generating worldwide interest, but then only allowing a very few in one geographical location to see it. It took a year for Hogfather to be broadcast in this country, and the Region 1 DVD only this week became available. The thought of waiting a year to see The Colour of Magic is almost unbearable! :-O Those who are already fans, or have listened to the hype and want the product, will find it any way they can. Disliking him would have been like kicking a puppy. |
