That was more or less what's pulling me back towards it, that and the fact that vetinari is supposed to dye his hair... I always thought Rickman was too old now, but seeing him as Snape kind of rang the right bell...

Only on an amateur basis. He has played Vetinari, and according to Wikipedia most representations of him are now modelled to a greater or lesser extent on him (not so sure about that second bit, myself - though if you look under the entry for Caroc Cards in 'The Companion', the sketch of 'The Ruler' card does bear a distinct resemblance to Mr Briggs)

Stephen Briggs would like to play Vetinari in a movie and yes, he does act. He wrote the scripts for several books so that they can be done on the stage and he is involved in a theatre company. He portrays Vetinari at the Conventions and he did also at the town twinning at Wincanton in 2002.
Pictures of Vetinari are very like Briggs but I'm not sure which came first. Apparently Briggs was upset a bit because he didn't get a part in Hogfather but then the Patrician wasn't in it. Briggs also produces DW merchandise on a website as stephenbriggs.com cmot dibbler |
