Why is it that when I want to study I can't get on to the internet.

Appart from the internet everything is going well with my course I have essay's due in November so I will have to get them started. I have a book review to do so thats more reading I will have to fource myself to do. I just have to keep in mind my overall goal for my degree.

I hope they catch the rice stelers Tamyra. We have a problem of people stealing food in the dorms including my milk. If I see them doing it they may get the ginger beer trick. Hehehe.
  2. randywine Member

Thats weird. When I was uni in the murky early part of this decade and I 'wanted' to study, I almost always ended up wasting time on the internet.

My trust in home remedies has finally been shaken. Normally I fight off every sniffle and cough with a Beechams powder and a shot of whisky (or whiskey if it's available)
Not this time. Two days after my official 'Old Git's Day' I was beginning to wonder if the cold I had picked up was in fact the dreaded swine flu. After the doc was called in he gave me a clean bill of health apart from the pneumonia I was suffering from. Almost three weeks trying to become amphibious the anti-biotics (most untrustworthy) have finally done their job. I am still alive, still haven't grown gills and am ready to go out and give my new bus pass a trial run.

But first, I have to play catch up on the rest of the boards.

I think I may now have to change my signature to "Too old to die young" :D

Glad to hear that you're OK now Joc... At least you didn't go the method I've seen in movies which involves a steak knife and a straw.

No big news, I didn't go to a meeting by accident but my boss may definitely hate me now.

I had this little story sent to me today.

Lipstick in School (You've got to love this principal)

According to a news report, a certain private school in Brisbane was recently faced with a unique problem. A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints.
Every night the maintenance man would remove them and the next day the girls would put them back.
Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night (you can just imagine the yawns from the little princesses). To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required.

He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror.

There are teachers.... and then there are educators.

Jock that was brilliant. Just what I needed after the e-mail I got from one of my lectures. It was good and bad new at the same time. My essay due date has been extendend which is the good thing. The bad thing is that I now have three things due in on the same day. I want to scream. I think next week I will be chained to my computer to do all my studing and stuff like that.
  8. randywine Member

    @ Joc - Quality man.
  9. spiky Bar Wench

That's a really old story... I heard it years ago I wonder why it's resurfaced??? Its still gold though.

I just had one of those weekends where there was too much wine. I'm now tired, with a headache and a weird tick under my right eye. I'm back at teaching so this is going to be a very long day...

    Hi there

    Hi There

I have just joined the group. I'm a mum of 3 who had to give up work to look after her youngest who has a tracheostmy and needs 24hr care. He's OK at the moment and full of beans. Reading Terry Pratchett has filled many long boring hours spent waiting around in hospitals. I love his books and will probably be seeking solace in them when my eldest goes off on his school cruise around Greece and Eygpt.

I am also learning sign language and spent most of the weekend swotting up for the next class, in between being a taxi, bank and general dogs body. Well that's about it.
  11. Joculator The 'Old' Fool

Wow, Jnine, sounds like you have more than your share of busyness at this moment. Welcome to the board.

As we're all a lot of nosey so and so's maybe you could fill in the scientifically produced questions in the Introduction thread . These have been cunningly thought out by certain people to find out what lurks in the deepest corner of your thoughts.

Well, not really but it's a more noticeable ice-breaker for new members :D

    Have fun with the answers.

One very, very long week just gone by. Mom was rushed to hospital eight days ago after having a very bad angina attack in the middle of the night that scared the pants off of all of us. Six days later she finally gets seen by her doctor - sitting in a valuable, much needed (by someone else) hospital bed, feeling completely fine, twiddling her thumbs, waiting for an angiogram which finally revealed...drumroll....nothing! Apparently her heart is much better than the last time she had an angiogram last year and there is no reason for her to have had an attack. So they've upped all her meds and let her go at 9am yesterday, just in time to go to my cousin Angela's wedding.
My cousin Barry went on a drinking bender last tuesday and hasn't been seen since, which we all found out from his brother yesterday when he didn't turn up for the wedding, and the family feud between the bride's mother and two of my uncles (one of them her twin) has gone up a notch. As has the 'not very happy with you' between my parents and one of my brothers who didn't bother coming to see mom when she was in the hopsital. Sometimes I wonder if I am the only 'normal' person in my family, immediate and extended. For a given value of normal at least
  13. Jnine New Member

Sorry to hear about your Mum. There's nothing like a wedding to bring out the best or the worst in your family. It's just a pity you can't pick your family like you can your friends, but then weddings and family events would be dreadfully dull don't you think. Hope things improve and your cousin is located save and well.......
  14. randywine Member

Maze, I hope things gets better. These things usually pass.

  15. spiky Bar Wench

Sorry to hear about all that Maze. I've got my sisters wedding in a couple of weeks and 8 people staying in my house. One of which is my brother who is going through possibly the world's messiest divorce*. My Dad is also staying who is financing the disaster that is his legal fees and the whole shebang is very tense.

    *Never marry a crazy person.

Devoices can be very messy. I hope your mum is felling better maze I know what it is like to have a mother who can fall ill very quickly.

Just sent in my second peace of course work a day ahead of time. I am now working on my next pece which just needs typing up as I have already had written it. I am off to Inverness this week to my confrence so I am looking forward to that.

I'm gettin old. My back hurts from splitting wood. My Legs hurts from dragging brush. My hands hurt from loading firewood. My feet hurt from wearing high heels.
  19. spiky Bar Wench

Well no wonder. Didn't anyone ever tell you not to wear high heals while engaged in manual labour... its just a recipe for bunions.

I've finished teaching for the semester. Yay! Just have the exam to go. Boo! Have been screwed at work and made to teach summer school. Double boo!!
  20. peapod_j New Member

I have six weeks left of University and I have to finish reading my book for my book review in a week so I have time to write my review. I also have to write two essays but I already have one hand written. The last one should not take to long to write as it is on a subject I love studing.

I have spent most of this week worrying about my 13 year old son who is currently on a cruise around Greece, turkey and Eygpt. I'm sure he's fine but it doesn't help that his first phone call home was to say that his flight to Athens had to be diverted to another airport has the weather was to bad for them to land at Athens. Never mind I'm off to see Abba Mania tonight so will no doubt will be singing along with my 10 year old, purely as a way of taking my mind off things.;)

Just arrived back from my holidays in Stockholm, had a great time and loved the place, although my feet are now terribly sore from pounding the streets... Time for some rest!

I'm going to Chile, I'm going to Chile, la la la la la la la...
  24. jaccairn New Member

Lucky You! Is that on holiday and anytime soon?

I am cursed trying to read the Red Wolf Conspiracy by Robert V.S. Redick. The first book I got from Amazon was missing pages 247 to 262, I had a repeat of pages 215 to 230. So I return it and request a replacement.

The replacement is missing pages 215 to 230 but has an extra set of pages 247 to 262. If I still had both books I'd have all the pages for two books! This time I've asked for a refund. I think I'll have to go to a bookshop and check it first before buying as Amazon obviously doesn't.
  25. mazekin Member

I'm going on holiday in march with my Aunt to visit my brother and do some touring. It's not booked yet, but it has been decided, and dates are being discussed. I've gotten approval from work and I'm just hoping that it won't be like the ill-fated 'I'm going to Hawaii' from last year, in which I didn't go. Fingers crossed!

Got my first grade back today. I got a C that I am very proud of and I was just 3% short of getting a B so that is my next target. I will get a B I'm sure of it.

Lost my mobile. No mobile makes Peapod go cooko-crazy and get no sleep as I will miss my class if I go to bed (I really need to get an arlarm clock which is not my mobile).
  28. Katcal I Aten't French !

So, my run of bad luck continues... I have had a lot of tooth trouble lately, which has not only caused me a lot of (unnecessary) pain, but also cost me a fair chunk of cash (bloody Irish health service - or lack of). The latest eisode of that saga saw me walking out of the dentist's without being given the prescription I had been promised for extra strong painkillers, because, and I quote, "it will be a little sore when the anesthetic wears off". I barely avoided screaming when my tooth woke up on the coach on the way home, and by the time I got off it, I was crying like a baby. Yup, I really did need those painkillers.
Anyhoo, once that had cleared up, I suddenly got a rather dramatic-looking rash all over my face, and achey-pains all over which at first I thought were flu symptoms. Then the rash got worse, and I pretty much ended up looking like a strawberry. A teenage strawberry. Bright red and swollen with little white spots all over the place, and also very hot and painful to the touch.

So on Sunday, I gave up and went to the local A&E, where they did loads of tests and then, 5 hours later, concluded that they had no idea what it was. So they gave me some antibiotics and some cream for the rash and sent me home. Well, it seems to be working, kind of, so I won't complain yet, but still, bloody annoying.
  29. mazekin Member

    Bloody swine flu...
  30. spiky Bar Wench

Dunno. COuld be avian influenza... Sounds like Kat's got chicken skin all over.

    Hope you feel beter soon.
  31. mazekin Member

Kat, I hope your skin and toothache has improved!

Dr. says it's piggy flu. I've had all the meds, the headaches and the sore joints to prove it... But thankfully I'm feeling much better now.
  32. peapod_j New Member

Hope you are feeling better Kat. Just be glad you don't have to check every priscption your doctor gives you incase it kills you like my mum has to as well as myself. Having a food intolerance is fun (not).

Working hard at university only four weeks until i am home cant wait to see every one again. I have really missed them.

I now have a love hate relationship with long weekends. This is because I love them for the time off but hate them because my campus is shut even though I have class. I love my lectures though I e-mailed them to tell them why I wasn't on the VC and they e-mailed me back saying it was ok. One of them said that she called the VC master and they told her my campus was closed I can just see her face, it would have been a picture of shock. Unwanted day off for me. :)

    Home in 2 weeks. Yay.

The lure of copper attracts idiots.

I have an unofficial estimate of tomorrow night for reconnection, apparently they're working around the clock but with a cable holding a 1000 wires it'll take time to do.

Now that it's the last week of class for the semester what better way to procrastinate than to post on a board I haven't looked at in many months?

I have way to many papers/projects to finish in the week I have left plus applying to grad schools and getting recommendation letters and writing a statement of purpose. I just can't wait for this semester to be over so I can go home for 3 weeks. This semester has been the stressful and caused me to start clenching my teeth while I slept and I was in pain for a few days but of course by the time I got a dentist appointment the pain had gone away.

    Hello from me

    Hi there,

I haven't been on for a while, but I tend to forget everything and only focus on Christmas for the month of December, and then it's over and I can't even remember past finishing cooking the dinner. Which was on time and finished before the Queens speech which kept the old uns happy. The young uns were kept happy with presents of itouchs and Dr Who. So all in all a good Christmas was had by all. The only thing missing was the Hogfather, but at least there was no fallings out. New year was spent watching the fireworks out the window but it passed peacefully, which is where I wish everyone health, wealth, happiness and peace for 2010, may all your wishes come true.

Update No: 1 the kids are bored, the cars are bored, the decorations are down so the house seems bored, the weather is frightful so if anybody wants me I'll be under the duvet with one of my many Terry Pratchett books.......

Hot here. seriously hot. 36C for saturday 38C by next wednesday.

Really bad day. After 6 hours straight of talking I cam home to discover that my sisters dogs are being picked up earlier than expected. So no time to get someone else to wash them or get a self washing hydro-bath option. No a was up to my knees in a wading pool trying to get 3 dogs wet, scrubbed and rinsed. I feel so dirty/hairy/cruel.
  42. TamyraMcG Active Member

I am going to wash Albert tomorrow because his "dad" and stepdogmom are supposed to be getting him back this Friday or Saturday, he was washed before he came so he'll be washed before he leaves. I may not get the chance to do this again, I have been spoiled by only having cats that can be left by themselves for a day or so with no trouble. I haven't been able to make my usual trips to Bemidji in a while.
  43. randywine Member

People pay good money to feel that way y'know.

  44. spiky Bar Wench

Well I'm not sure if I can make a business out of it but I'm willing to consider it.
  45. redneck New Member

This is a very big depressing one. If you're having a good day pass this one by until your day is shit and then read it, make your day not seem as bad.

Let me preface this with this idea, if you're going to blow your fucking head off, do it at your house and leave everyone else the fuck alone. That may give you an idea of where this is headed.

I was phoned this afternoon that my sister-in-law's sister had been killed by her ex-husband before he turned the gun on himself. Her mother was with her, helping her move in the last of her furniture into her new apartment. The ex-husband had been stalking her and had a restraining order against him. He had parked his truck down the street, hidden behind some bushes until she came home, and then started arguing with her as soon as she showed up.

The investigation is still going on, but he had to have been there for at least a while, in 20 degree cold, waiting for her to get home. Why couldn't he have done the noble thing and blasted his fucking ass to hell in the comfort and privacy of his own room? Or why hadn't his mother been a dear and aborted his goddamned fetus before he had a chance to tarnish the world with his essence?

Sorry to be depressing and vile, but this just doesn't make any fucking sense. I've had suicidal thoughts and emotions, but they have never included killing someone else before I kill myself. It seemed more hurtful to think of killing myself and having them live with the consequence of knowing that they were the catalyst for it. The only thing that keeps running through my head is, "This is fucked up." Does anyone have any kind of answer, explanation, or anything to help?
  46. Hsing Moderator

Explanation? No, not really. First, I hope your family somewhow manages to deal with this... What a fucked up start into the new year.

Then... it just seems like the ultimate abuse to me. That he'd rather see her dead and himself too than see her leaving his sorry ass and have a life without him. I think what's behind such murders is very messed up, and very widespread in various degrees. At least somewhere during the last decade, people seem to have stopped calling such things a double suicide and now call it murder/ suicide. I know that's no comfort, but at least it is one small insult less the people left behind have to deal with.
I don't know what comes first in these cases, or when someone runs amok and then shoots himself... the thought of killing the other person and then take care noone can make you deal with the consequences of your deeds? I am not sure suicide comes first here. I know there are cases where either the surviving murderer or someone else said they wanted to "take their loved ones with them", but in those cases the person doing the killing tries methods that don't "hurt" (pills, shooting a person that is asleep at the time), and don't act violent before the murder. In this case, or in many cases like this, I tend to think this is more a chauvinistic murderer and a coward on top of it.
  47. randywine Member

I was sorry to read your post mate, I also hope that you and your family can find a way to get though this time.

  48. spiky Bar Wench

Nate thats a shocker. Just makes you want to put a bullet in his dead arse.

The ex was obviously a messed up individual but there is no excuse to kill someone first. It seems like pure selfishness, the 'if I can't have you then no one will' kind of thinking. Starting with the first of all evils, he thought of his wife as an object, that he owned and how dare she say or do otherwise.

I hope some day you guys can come to terms with it but I don't think an answer will take away the grief.
  49. jaccairn New Member

  50. mazekin Member

I know I shouldn't complain; there's plenty of people out there with none...but I'm now on day 10 of having 6 hours of water in the house a day, with not enough pressure to run either the shower or the washing machine...and the water is usually on while I'm at work, and they turn it on late every single bloody time! Aaaargh! was only on for three hours today...

    ...I'm getting fed up...

    ...stupid weather...
  51. Katcal I Aten't French !

Crap, Nate, really sorry to hear that, and like the others, I have no explanation except that he must have been really messed up. I guess you already have to be a bit of a nutter just to get a restraining order against you, so he was probably part of the way there by that time... Shit, that really sucks, my condolences to your family and in-laws.
  52. Garner Great God and Founding Father

I was warned that we were looking at aproximately a 25% increase in student numbers across all cohorts for this September.

This afternoon we had a team meeting where the official numbers were confirmed. I did some quick math on my notepad and realized that the increase is more on the order of 225% (223.4%, if you wanna get picky but not run on for a dozen decimal places).

This will put us on par with the September intake for the Diploma course, a programme which has four admin supporting it (but admittedly it has a second, smaller intake later in the academic year). Does this mean that they're hiring a new person to work on my team? No; there's not even enough money to replace upcoming vacancies on other mission critical posts. Does this mean that they're going to give me a pay rise to recognize my increased workload? No; don't be ridiculous, of course not, even if there was money to do so with.

In fact, about the only likely assistance I could remotely hope for is that they'll transfer the least popular, least friendly, and least productive member of one of the other teams to work in my office. If they so much as hint at that, I'm going to be opening the situations vacant.
  53. TamyraMcG Active Member

I'm sorry for the trauma, Nate, but I have no ideas how to make it understandable let alone less difficult. He must never have had his grandma explain this thing to him, my grandma did once long ago when some young person committed suicide and I have never been able to get past that first selfish thought since, thank goodness and Grandma. I am about to lose her soon, the sweet gals at her assisted living home are caring for her through the last days now. She was a wonderful woman who did a world of good for her whole community in that quiet quiet way we have so little respect for but should cherish so much. I don't know whether to see her again, I haven't since the last hospital stay and I don't know if she would know if I did or if I should take that memory as my last. I think from what my folks are saying she has pretty much left, just her body is still ticking away, but maybe it would mean something to me to go and say that goodbye I just hate to have to say.
  54. spiky Bar Wench

Welcome to university life. We are slow, unable to cope with the unexpected and don't appreciate admin staff... it's a good thing we get a cheese trolley...

...hang on... we must of lost that bequest.
  55. TamyraMcG Active Member

Cheese trolley, that just makes me laugh.

I did go to see my Grandma today, I was right about her being all but gone. She will probably make it through tonight but this is very close to the end.if it weren't for all the pillows she would barely make a lump in her bed, eight of the close family gathered in her room tonight, there is an ice storm that kept some away, others have decided they can't handle being there, including my dad, but there is nothing left to do but wait and we can do that anywhere. Adam is being very understanding and supportive even if he can't be here with me. I wouldn't have wanted him to attempt the drive down here on the road conditions today, it is hovering around freezing and raining. I just hope the electricity doesn't go out.

Garner , if there are going to be so many more students , won't there also be more tuition being paid? or is that just foolish thinking? I think that phrase "Illigitimi non carborundum " may be the only consolation I can offer.
  56. TamyraMcG Active Member

My Grandma Sis passed away yesterday with her youngest son by her side. He had been called away when his dad passed, so we are all glad he was there for his own sake. She was born in 1915, married in 1935,became a mother in 1936, a mother in law in 1959, a grandmother in 1960, a widow in 1981, a great grandmother in 1983, a great great grandmother in 2004, and left us in 2010. Her oldest brother survives her, but the other two brothers and four sisters are with her now. I think everyone who knew her came to love her because she had love for everyone. Six children, eighteen grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren and hundreds of nieces and nephews, all are going to miss her.

sorry to hear about the loss. I lost my great gran about a year ago now she was the last one of her family and wasnt expected to live past birth. She had a great love of life. people say you will get over it but you never do. I still miss my Grandad from my dad and i think about him a lot.

On a happer note I now have a new laptop that is fantasic. I have never had a brand new laptop before so its quite strange (my last one was second hand). I thought I would never say this but I'm glad I'm dislexic and i get funding due due to it. Now I just have to get used to using it.
