CoC - Investigator roll-up and Fleshing Out

    Right, it took me ages to type all of that rule-thread stuff in, but at least now I remember it better. If anything is unclear, ask me here, or during the game itself when a situation that requires aid presents itself.

    This topic is for any pre-game discussions on your characters, but I also expect that you use email, PM, and MSN to contact me at any time, because not everything is good to discuss on this thread. For example, I expect to discuss your character background and history privately before it is approved and posted here.

    Your character can be from any reasonable origin, but discuss detailed professions (as described in the Keeper's Guide to the 1920s) with me before choosing them. I have deliberately omitted Wealth from the Rules thread because I have decided that the current financial status of your investigators will not depend on a standard random die-roll. Plot-driven or profession-driven constraints will apply, depending on how you plan out your investigators, and I will inform you of your finances once the character is fleshed out.

    Also, for story-related reasons, aim for your character to live and work in Boston, Massachusetts, or in the nearby environs, at least for the time period just before the game starts. Only describe events leading up to 1921 for your characters. The interval between 1921 and 1922 may or may not be filled up by me, for story purposes. Our first scenario will be set in 1922.

    For the stats, roll 4d6 five times for STR, CON, DEX, POW, and APP. In each case, ignore the sum, drop the lowest d6 die, and note the value.

    For EDU, roll 4d6 in a clearly separate position or with a distinct notation, drop the lowest die, and add 3. Note this value.

    For INT and SIZ, roll 3d6, ignore the lowest, and replace it with a 6. Note
    the values.

    This is your first set. If you think that it is truly bad, you may re-roll it two more times, but be advised that once you do this, the result is final. You can't change back to the previous set if your next set is worse, so think carefully before discarding one.

    Once you pick a final set and choose which number goes to which characteristic, you may shift 3 points from one characteristic to another. You may repeat this procedure twice (note for those who read the version of the rules thread before the edit, yes, it was changed).

    The code for stat rolls should look similar to this:

    Code:
    [rollv=1] 4d6 [/rollv]
    [rollv=2] 4d6 [/rollv]
    [rollv=3] 4d6 [/rollv]
    [rollv=4] 4d6 [/rollv]
    [rollv=5] 4d6 [/rollv]

    [rollv=EDU] 4d6 [/rollv]

    [rollv=1] 3d6 [/rollv]
    [rollv=2] 3d6 [/rollv]
    Only without the spaces. An example set looks like this:

    The result gives us 17, 9, 15, 12, and 14 for the first five characteristics, 17+3 = 20 for EDU, along with 4+5+6 = 15 and 5+6+6 = 17 for the last two.

    These are good numbers. Very good numbers, in fact. Don't mess such numbers up by re-rolling them, because you're likely to get a couple of characteristics of 3-7 for your bother. Investigators with such low characteristics can be fun to play though, so consider keeping them.

    Before re-rolling a set, consult me. I won't deny you the chance outright, but you're still better off discussing the matter with me before doing it.

    Now, I don't expect investigator creating to start fully until a week or two have passed (you all have some reading to do, after all), but feel free to prove me wrong.

    This section has now been pointed out to Garner. Roman, if we keep rolling out stats in this thread, it's going to take forever and a lot of space. Are you averse to us rolling with physical dice and a witness?
  9. Buzzfloyd Spelling Bee

    Nothing to see here.

    OK, assuming I read your instructions correctly, Roman, I can assign the first five to whichever stat I want? Also, when shifting points from one characteristic to another, you said this may be repeated twice - do you mean it can be done a total of 2 or 3 times?

    okay, having had things pointed out to me, the above stand as my stats. I've shifted two points out of dex, one each into Edu and Int.

    will flush out some character specifics later.

    Garner, be on MSN tomorrow.

    Grace, this thread was actually *meant* to be cluttered. ;-)
    Also, I think that as each set takes 1-2 posts, it isn't that much of a mess, really. If you want though, we could do this on AIM. I prefer seeing the rolls myself (and being in the capacity to give advice on the spot).

    Regarding characteristics, the results of the first five rolls are spread amoung the abovementioned five stats (STR, CON, DEX, POW, APP) in whichever way you want. The same method applies to the last two rolls and the two related stats (INT, SIZ). Only EDU is a static roll, made specifically for that characteristic.

    On shifting points: you may shift points up to two times, each time shifting 1-3 points from one characteristic to another.
  15. Roman_K New Member

    Garner, nevermind about being on MSN, it would seem that your problem was a much simpler one. ;-)

    Stats approved.

    And now, I sleep.

    By the way, Grace, 'goyim' is plural, and would in fact mostly refer to nations. It just... doesn't quite work here. 'goyi' now...

    Right, here's the rough version of the character. skills and stats to be completed later.

    Dr Jakob Diederich: born in Bohemia to an aristocratic family, his parents moved up to Berlin when he was just a baby so he grew up very much a Prussian. Jakob was educated in Heidelberg, graduating with a focus in medicine and psychology during the Great War. It was also at this time that he fell in with a group of students who were into the German Mysticism/Occultism revival. After graduation Jakob spent some time traveling in the Orient, secretly on a mission for the Imperial high command, until the war ended and he made a hasty return home with his newly acquired manservant, Kong Ming.

    Seeing the state of post war Germany, and Europe in general, he sold his interests at home and moved to England, where he completed his studies at Oxford University and obtained a Doctorate of Medicine with a specialization in Psychiatry. By late 1921, he had moved to Massachusets, settling in the small town of Arkham where he did some post graduate research at the Miskatonic University and the Arkham asylum.

    the character will have a strong focus in skills such as medicine, biology, chemistry, and psychology. Additional skills are occultism (germanic and oriental) and linguistics (german, latin, english, probably greek, chinese, and arabic as well).

    Dr Diederich is quite young, mid to late twenties, usually very well dressed. More later.

    Edit: Roman's determined that Dr D's anual income is 20k, with 100k in property. This will reflect overseas investments, proceeds from the sale of estates in germany, and aquisitions from the far east.

    Right I was going to do all this now (as the man from BT has just been and fixed my telphone line) but I have been called away by Mrs R. for the old last minute, rugby-tackle-my-way-through-ASDA, shopping trip.
    I shall complete this on boxing day by either using those numbers (even though they were pretty sad) or I may do a re-roll.

    BTW - The reason my last post said 'Not really sure about this...' was because I wasn't sure I was doing the correct thing to do the rolls - but it worked anyhow. Right must go.

  20. Roman_K New Member

    That isn't a good set, Randywine. The high rolls aren't that high, and the rest are below average. I reccomend to roll a second set when you get the chance, rather than using the current one.
  21. Buzzfloyd Spelling Bee

    Evidently I should stick to jokes in my own language. Roman, I'll work with the stats I rolled, unless you think I should reroll.

    sorry about that I think I'm having a dumb moment.
  25. randywine Member

    so that gives me:

    1 - (4d6)[1][3][6][1](11)
    2 - (4d6)[6][1][1][2](10)
    3 - (4d6)[4][1][1][1](7)
    4 - (4d6)[6][3][4][4](17)
    5 - (4d6)[4][3][1][2](10)

    EDU - (4d6)[2][3][4][2](11)

    1 - (3d6)[5][5][3](13)
    2 - (3d6)[2][3][5](10)

    so many 1's :sad:
  26. Roman_K New Member

    Ouch! Randywine, this set isn't much better than the last one, I'm afraid. You have a little more to do with these, though, so if you want to keep these rolls...

    My recommendation is to roll the third set, though.

    Grace, your set is good, though I'd shift some points to EDU.
  27. Roman_K New Member

    VERY IMPORTANT:

    I've corrected an errata in the rules thread. You have 20 x EDU profession points, *not* 15 x EDU.
  28. Roman_K New Member

    A note on funds:

    For those who have already discussed their investigator finances with me, 10% of your property is cash in the bank, readily available. An extra 10% is stocks and bonds, convertible to cash within a month. The remaining 80% is pure property.

    This is true unless I have said otherwise while discussing your particular character.
  29. randywine Member

    Ok, Roman I'll roll a third set and NO MATTER WHAT they turn out to be I'll use them. So here goes ---

    That set is good to go, Randywine, and is better than the previous two. Time to put those characteristic rolls to use!
