Mal, I can't remember some of this stuff even though I'm sure its been asked a dozen times before, but a comment you made in the shout box brought it back to mind...

I've noticed times when we've had dozens of visitors on the site. even 10 or so seems a bit much but 88 is amazing. are they here to read the boards or to play the games or can they even access any of those features?

Can you tell where they're coming to us from, as well? Do we know if our old links are still working or if they're getting to us from search engines?

And, lastly, if they're just here to play our games, are they soaking up our precious bandwidth and costing you money, or are they helping to make via the google ads?

Well you can easily see what they can see and do by logging out.

But anyway, they can read all our pages, stories and message boards because it has to be that way otherwise our pages would not register in Google etc. If you lock out visitors you lock out Google too.

They can't post anything or submit stories or make comments. They can play the games but they don't get a high score.

The links from the old site do still work, there is a list of http referers to check this. I know Hsing is interested in this stuff too, I never got around to finding a viable way to make the list available to view. The thing is if you do they get deliberately manipulated by naughty webmasters putting a link to your site and clicking it a few hundred times just to get on your referes list then delete the link.

Anyway the links to us most clicked today are:

1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discworld
2. and 3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Pratchett
4. http://www.terrypratchettbooks.com/u...5;t=000026;p=1

various google links, even a German one: http://www.google.de/search?q=+%22Di...rt=10&sa=N

and the odd article pays off:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...orld&meta=

The bandwidth hasn't been affected yet. I guess the google ads help a bit but I don't really pay much attention to that. I've tried to keep them pretty low key on here with none in the forums where most of us spend our time.

I'll go and check on the google ad money now.... dum dee dum.... they made $11.33 in January, or about 5 quid so that just about covers the hosting and domain reg, which is fine by me.

Edit: just noticed we have a link from Locus Magazine too: http://www.locusmag.com/Links/Authors.html
