I love the idea of creating duplicate signs to auction for the Alzheimer's charity, but how long will the originals stay put? I can see the local powers-to-be replacing them once a week thanks to slightly dishonest people wanting to make a quick buck from true fans.

Pretty cool! There are other streets I would have chosen, though, I think. *goes to peruse Streets of Ankh-Morpork*

People were talking about this at work, mostly remarking on how sad it was. Of course, i immediately lept up and agreed whole heartedly, feigning ignorance of any particular knowledge of the streets of ankh-morpork, and the works of terry pratchett in particular.

I have to maintain an outward air of normality at work, although some workmates did manage to wheedle out of me one evening at the pub how i met ella. Down to the nature of the message board and everything. I can just about cope with the shame of meeting someone on a message board, even though online dating is becoming "cool" these days, but a pratchett one?

THE SHAME.

Thankfully, no one that knows about that was also present when the twinning of the towns were being discussed, otherwise i'm sure i'd have been asked for comments, as a discworld expert.

That would be so cool to have a street named after a street you made up in a story. What other places are there that get their names from stories?

Agreed, it's a lovely idea.

I found out about this through an article in 'The Metro', though they made a couple of errors - they referred to Peace Pie Street (even though there was a photo of the sign) and claimed the Ankh-Morpork newspaper was called 'The Truth'.

There are people who still have it in their heads that I only knew Garner for a week before agreeing to marry him, because they can't get take in the idea of getting to know someone "in a chatroom". It is wearying having to explain basic concepts of the internet to people over and over, but I've spent most of my life being quite clearly abnormal, so it never seems to surprise people that I met my husband on a Discworld fansite.

Surely it's because no-one would agree to marry him after having known him for more than a week?

Question for them... if you'd met in real life just once, say, on another person's wedding, where you both behaved and looked differently* and behaved differently** from normal, and then developed an internet based relationship via mail, chat, or message board, would it be really that different? (It probably would for many people, if your answer was "we met on a wedding/ a concert/ an auction..."). Well... maybe you'll be the cool parents due to this one day, whereas all the other parents who met in pubs asking for fire will hang their heads in shame.

*due to the occasion
**due to nervousness, or intoxication, or other altering things that go along with weddings.

While my husband and I met first in real-life the fact that we were in different cities meant that we got to know each other by sms and phone conversations puts it in a similar category... The internet just means that its long-distance meeting as well as dating.

Adam and I met "in a bar as God intended", but if I had not emailed him I doubt we would have actually become a couple, and our relationship is heavily dependant on phone conversations and the occasional email. I do think online relationships are only going to become more normal or at least differently normal as the years go on. If it works it is going to happen.

Perhaps they will be considered normal in years to come rather than "cool" as relationships started from initial meeting on the internet seem to have become part of mainstream culture. Maybe Garner and Grace will be considered pioneers since they got in on the deal a few years before it got big.
