Question readings - 10-16-2007, 18:12

hi everyone!
I hope I am in the right place.
I love disc world books although I am very new to them having only read 9.
I am getting 'civilized' next year and I would like my 13 year old son to read something on the day. Something funny and meaningful regarding friendship or marraige or partnership or love.
I feel sure that in all his books there has to be a paragraph that would some up a great friendship or love.
That is where you all come in.
Have any of you read something of his that may be suitable?
Thanks in advance.
And I hope this finds you all well!

What does it mean to get "civilized"?

I am sorry, I should have said. It is a funny way to say civil partnership.

I would try the new book "Wit and Wisdom of Discworld", that should be handy as it is full of quotes and stuff sorted by theme...

By theme? Well, from browsing through it, it looked more like just a "per book"? But then, I guess I could have missed an index...

Was it by book ? I must admit I only flicked through it while waiting for Terry to sign my Making Money, and my brain, as has been previously mentioned, was not at its sharpest at that point.

How long would the reading need to be ? I can think of a few quick sentences but nothing all that long, off hand...

I would say as little as a paragraph. A short conversation that has a little nice meaning or a few individual statements strung together.
Thanks for trying to help me.

Ba is surprised that no one has yet pointed to the Pratchett Quote File. It's by book, but it's well worth reading in any event.

Hi Muttsnhahn. Welcome to the Board.

Is your screen name also your email address? If so, It's probably not the best idea to post your email address in big letters on every post.

Normally, we don't approve of posters changing their screen names but I think in this case an exception could be made, if you explain that the new you is the old you so we know you aren't being devious.

Perhaps you could post more about yourself in the Introductions forum.

Well, you're not getting married in the strictest sense of the word, but this quote is pretty apt:

A marriage is always made up of two people who are prepared to swear that only the other one snores.

Sam and Sybil are the main source of good "living together/married" quotes (see above), although there are some good references to Colon's marriage. (Don't ask me what books they're in, I have a crap memory for stuff like that.)

Of course you might want to go for the explanation of Dwarf Marriage from Boddoni and the other dwarf in "The Truth". That's pretty good, and about a paragraph long.

Yes, that was the quote I was thinking of, the one I like the most, but it is a bit short, just on its own...
There may be some bits about relationships with Carrot and Angua (although I don't know if one of you is a werewolf, so this may not fit) and Magrat and Verence too.
