Lovecraft can convey this urgent manic mood very well, it moves you right along to things that you can see coming and begin to dread right along with the characters. He has a way to get to your very gut with his writing, yeah some of it is sort of corny in the end but the man has a way with words. He was a pioneer in speculative fiction and horror and well ahead of his time I think, I would say he was perhaps under rated in his day and just now being read in the way he wanted to be read.
