The High Priestess of the Great God Garner, Mynona by name, wandered the halls of the temple. This, as it is, isn’t unusual but both her clothing and her destination was. For one, she had clothing, something the Great God doesn’t like very much on his priestess-hood, and she was heading to the back gate of the temple. She was leaving, not to terrify heathen citizens into giving opals and krugerands or even to do her Great God’s bidding. No, she had a day off, she was leavening the temple to see what life was like on the outside.
Not once in the three years she’d been a Garnerite she’d had a day off. Every day had been filled with polishing opals, managing choirs and running errands for the Great God. She’d done all of it without complaining, well, that song she had to write she whined a bit about but she never complained.
The sun was shining outside and the grass was green. The marketsquare was not filled with people. From what Mynona could remember the market should have been the busiest place in the village. She couldn’t see any villagers. After a minute or two in silent contemplation she heard what sounded like singing and laughing from outside the village. She headed towards the sounds.
What she found surprised her greatly. All the villagers had gathered on the fields to the north of the village and they seemed rather happy about it. People were singing and dancing, playing instruments or games. All young girls and women wore crowns braided from summer flowers in their hair and everyone were wearing their best clothes. It looked as if they were celebrating something.
No matter how the High Priestess searched her memory she could not find a holiday that matched this one. She went through the Garnerite, the Witdan and the Doorman calendar but none of them had anything to celebrate today.
For many hours she spied… er… watched the people play about being happy. Shouldn’t they be about worrying about their crops or those peculiar spots that had started to cover their more intimate parts? When the sun, finally, started setting she returned to the temple and to a more familiar ground. She’d studied the people all day and come to one conclusion; she’d never understand other humans. As she took her clothes off again she decided never to take a day off ever again.
